Steep sloping woodland garden

Celebrating natural beauty

This secretive garden lives among dense, old trees, nestled in a steeply sloping woodland valley.

Our clients were looking for interesting ways to make the most of this difficult-to-access space, and connect the garden to the wider landscape.

This beautiful site needed a sensitive touch to enhance its natural features without taking away the essence of its ‘Hansel and Gretel’ feel.

An extended terrace uses the site's natural contours to ground itself into the setting, giving more room to enjoy gorgeous views across the valley. Water flows from the top of the site into a reflecting pond adding a sense of space and tranquility.

An arboretum at the lowest part of the garden grounds the house to its surroundings and is home to a woodland bulb meadow giving year round interest. A raised potager garden set back into the hill takes advantage of the sunniest part of the site for productive growing.

Guests are accommodated in a shepherds' hut tucked away in a private, enclosed space to the entrance.
