Visitor and staff wellbeing garden

An accessible haven for wildlife and people

Staff at a major recycling centre were looking for a calm, peaceful sanctuary away from the noise and busyness of the facility.

This narrow space along the north-facing edge of the building is divided into secluded areas for rest and quiet work. Water flows along a rill from a new dedicated visitor entrance to soothe the senses. A lush, low maintenance green wall of ferns and ivy sits behind, giving vital shelter to insects and birds. Solar-powered pods give shelter from the elements.

A potager garden is packed with shade-tolerant herbs and vegetables to use in the outdoor kitchen and delight the senses. Low maintenance, evergreen planting and a louvred roof pergola offer respite all year round. Wide, resin-bound gravel paths means visitors with lower mobility can enjoy the site.

The garden is designed almost exclusively using reused, reclaimed or upcycled hard landscaping, including some made from recycled materials sourced from the facility.
