Country estate and smallholding

A home for everyone

This country estate and smallholding is home to chickens, geese, sheep, horses, dogs and a pig as well as its owners, who were looking for more ways to enjoy their grounds all year round.

A natural swimming pond is immersed in planting, bordered by a new terrace set under a bespoke oak pergola and a changing cabin made from trees felled on site. Layered trees and shrubs screen the busy stable yard and functional areas from the rest of the garden.

Planting is delicate and naturalistic, designed to attract pollinators while being pet and livestock-friendly. Loosely pruned evergreen shrubs woven between perennials and grasses provide soft year-round structure to be enjoyed from the terrace, pool or house.

A perry orchard with heritage pear varieties sits in a new walled garden beyond a successional woodland bulb meadow that changes through the seasons. Curved lines of willow trees ground the land to nearby wetland and add interest to the previously empty paddocks.

To the front, far reaching views across the river valley are framed by willow and birch trees and relaxed cottage-style planting.
